Dr. Stacy Roback Obituary (1941 - 2012)

passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 20, 2012, at the age of 70. Throughout his 45 year career as a gifted pediatric surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Minnesota, Dr. Roback healed and touched the lives of thousands of children. His talent as a surgeon was complemented and exceeded by his empathetic, gentle manner that comforted countless families during difficult times with their sick child. That same beloved personality made Stacy a one-of-a-kind husband, father, grandfather and friend. His humble, selfless nature and his extensive knowledge and experience made him a unique and special human being.Born in Dallas, Texas, on May 3, 1941, Stacy was the son of Lillian and Sam Roback. He received his undergraduate degree from Tulane University and graduated with honors from the Tulane University School of Medicine. Stacy then completed an internship and residencies in pediatrics, general surgery, pediatric surgery, and thoracic/cardiovascular surgery at the University of Minnesota and was board certified in all four specialties. Stacy especially took pride in passing along his talents by helping mentor the next generation of doctors and by teaching students throughout his outstanding career. He was a senior partner at Pediatric Surgical Associates and former Chief of Staff at Children's Medical Center. Most recently, Stacy received several prestigious awards for his contribution and leadership in the medical profession. In 2010, Stacy received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the professional staff at Children’s Hospital. In 2011, Stacy was honored with the Charles Bolles Bolles Rogers award given by the Twin Cities Medical society for outstanding professional achievement. Stacy is survived by his loving wife, Donna and his three children, Robert (Jennifer), Scott (Michelle), and Stephanie Shapiro (David). Stacy was known affectionately as Papa to his eight grandchildren, Jamie, Casey, Owen, Stella and Finn Roback and Sam, Jake and Drew Shapiro. He is also survived by his close family, Steve and Susie Schneiderman, Cindy Leisch and nieces and nephews Zachary Schneiderman (Erin), Barry Schneiderman, Jody Darrow (Paul), and Alyson Kalter (Ricky) and many dear friends and colleagues.
