Cantor Shalom Markovits Obituary (1924 - 2012)

OBM, age 85 of St. Louis Park, passed away Nov. 12, 2012. He is preceded in death by parents, Moshe & Elka Markovits, sisters, Sarah, and Toby, and brother, Cantor David Rosenzweig. Survived by wife, Pnina; daughters, Liz (Howard) Rubin, Irit Vinitsky, and Judy (Keith) Rosenblum; grandchildren, Jonathan (Nechama), Michael (Stacey) and Amy Ackerman, Daniel and Sam Vinitsky, Drew and Will Rosenblum; great-granddaughters, Ashira and Nava Ackerman; brother, Mordechai (Ilana) Ronen; sister-in-law, Olga Rosenzweig; nephews, Moshe (Dara) and Dan Ronen, niece, Sara (Yisroel) Weingarten. Cantor Markovits was a proud survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. He was an Israeli war hero, and survivor of the attack on the ship, Altalena. He had a tremendous love for the Land and State of Israel, and in addition served as Mayor of Ramat Hasharon, Israel. He immigrated to the United States, with his family, serving as cantor at Mikro Kodesh, Tifereth Bnai Jacob, Bnai Emet, and Sharei Chesed Congregations. He was the patriarch of the Markovits family, where children, grandchildren, and great grand children affectionately called him "Abba". His love of family and instilling a strong love and commitment to Judaism and Israel was unparalleled. His family will forever continue to love and miss him. Funeral service WEDNESDAY 2PM at BETH EL SYNAGOGUE, 5224 West 26th St., St. Louis Park. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Center of Holocaust & Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
