Richard Hunegs

–

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Dick Hunegs, age 95, of St. Louis Park, a lifelong Minnesota Gopher football fan, died peacefully at home on September 27, 2026, while watching his team beat the University of Washington. In a remarkable coincidence, 86 years earlier, on September 28, 1940, 9-year-old Dickie attended his very first football game at Memorial Stadium and watched the Gophers defeat the same Washington Huskies. Dick was born April 24, 1931, in North Minneapolis to Marion and Sam Hunegs. He was educated in the Minneapolis Public Schools and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Minnesota. A proud patriot, Dick served his country in the U.S. Army’s anti-aircraft artillery, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. Dick was married to his high school sweetheart, Dobra “Dobie” Applebaum Hunegs, for 73 years. Together they raised three children in St. Louis Park. Dick was considered one of the finest Minnesota trial lawyers of his generation. He was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers. He was a partner of Bill DeParcq and later founded the law firm of Hunegs, LeNeave & Kvas. Over his career, Dick helped shape legal precedents that strengthened protections for Minnesotans. Asked why he entered the profession, he said simply that he saw the law as “a way to serve people.” Dick was deeply committed to his community. He was president of Oak Ridge Country Club in Hopkins, Minnesota, and High Ridge Country Club in Palm Beach, Florida. He coached Little League baseball, youth football and youth hockey, and led Dutch Boy Paints to five consecutive Park Central Little League championships. He was an avid golfer, loved to fish and played on two state championship slow-pitch softball teams. Dick is survived by his wife, Dobie; his children, Carolyn Bloom (Stuart), Craig, Steve (Jenifer Robins); his grandchildren, Molly Bloom (Andy DuCett), Mickey Bloom (Catherine Regio), Delia Bloom (Tony Albanese), Marta Hunegs (Shawn Wagoner), Simon Hunegs, Kiki Hunegs (Julian Shabahang), Brita Hunegs, Danny Hunegs and Dinah Hunegs; his great-grandchildren, Lulu DuCett, Siena and Nico Wagoner, and Sylvie Bloom; his sister, Sue Solender; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family extends special thanks to his caregivers, Alberta, Lydia, Rejoice and Sabrina.
