Millicent Lurye Weinberg Obituary (1928 - 2014)

Millicent (Lurye) Weinberg, age 86, died on Friday, October 17 in her home in St. Louis Park, MN Originally from Superior, Wisconsin, she was born to Jack and Ethel Mandel and attended the University of Minnesota. She married and moved to Duluth where she and her husband, Robert Lurye, raised their children, the main loves of her life. When the children were of school age, she returned to college and received her teaching degree. She spent over twenty years teaching English at Duluth East High School where her interpretations of literature were insightful and without compare, and her relationships with students were individual and personal. In her tenure, she impacted hundreds of students, some of whom became life-long friends. Millie found joy in being involved at the Duluth Playhouse where she portrayed comedy and drama, music and dance. She loved being on the stage as much as the classroom. Most of all, Millie loved her family. She taught them life lessons and skills, ethics and values, cabin life and cooking. She had a zest for learning, living, and loving. It was her wish that, upon her death, her family erects a bench overlooking Lake Superior with the inscription, “She loved Duluth, her family, and food- not in that order.” She was a devoted daughter, loving wife, adoring mother, and smitten grandmother. Preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Dan Ansell and Edward Weinberg; sons-in-law, Thomas Silver and Robert Tuttle. Survived by children, Anita Silver, Leah Lurye-Tuttle, and David (Patricia) Lurye; grandchildren, Alyson (Benjamin) Weiss, Andrea (Steven) Champaloux, and Joshua Tuttle. FUNERAL SERVICE SUNDAY, 10:00 a.m., BET SHALOM CONGREGATION, 13613 Orchard Rd., Minnetonka, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Bet Shalom Congregation (Minnetonka), Temple Israel (Duluth), Herzl Camp, Duluth Public Schools Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, or Duluth Playhouse.
