Jack Pred

–

Saint Paul, Minnesota

Jack Harold Pred of Mendota Heights, MN, formerly of Aberdeen, SD, passed away at age 83 on October 11, 2015. Preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Sonia and Sister, Maxine (Bubbles). Survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Susan; devoted sons, Mike (Tracey), Dan (Kristy) and Sam (Renee); adoring grandchildren, Amanda, Jack, Rachel, Audrey, Jenna, Abigail and Sonya. Jack was loved and cherished by everyone who knew him. He will be forever remembered and greatly missed. Jack Pred was a man who possessed a great will to live life to its fullest with dignity, integrity, and a deep appreciation for laughter, music, sports, dogs, good food, ice cream and his family and friends. He was kind, funny and a gentle, good man. He lived his life by example and impacted each and every person he met. As a husband and father, his love was unconditional and limitless. As a grandfather, Poppy was loving, playful and supportive. As a merchant, he was innovative, honest and successful. And as a human being, he was compassionate, kind and generous. Like his father Abe, Jack loved baseball and especially the Twins. He was also a loyal and passionate Vikings fan. Jack was born and raised in Aberdeen, SD. After a short period of time at the University of Iowa, he was drafted into the US Army. It was there that he played on the army baseball team. Following his service, Jack returned to Aberdeen and joined the family business. As was the case with many Jewish immigrants, Jack’s father, Abe, was the son of a peddler (Isaac). In 1916 Isaac bought a bankrupt store in Scotland, SD and sent his sons Abe and Dan to Aberdeen with the stores stock to dispose of it. Abe and Dan were so impressed with Aberdeen that they opened a brick and mortar store. In 1954 when Jack left the Army, he joined his parents in the family business in what was then Pred’s. Jack learned the business and saw opportunity in specializing in coats, ultimately opening Pred’s Coats Etc. stores in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls South Dakota, Grand Forks and Fargo North Dakota, and Sioux City and Council Bluffs Iowa. He spent most of his time on the floor selling with passion and treating his customers and employees like family. Jack and Susan sold the business in 1997, retired and moved to St. Paul, MN. Jack will be most remembered for being the ultimate family person, a true friend, and the consummate overall mensch. The family extends its appreciation to his caregivers at the Sholom Home and special caregiver Donna Norrel. Funeral service TUESDAY 11:30 AM, at MOUNT ZION TEMPLE, 1300 Summit Avenue in St. Paul. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association or the donor’s favorite charity. SHIVA at Mount Zion Temple, Tuesday 7:00 pm.
