Cohen, Allan, age 86, of Golden Valley, loved and respected father, husband, and grandfather and retired business owner, died peacefully in the early hours of October 24, 2007, only a few weeks after a cancer diagnosis. Born in May 1922, on a Native Reservation in northern Manitoba, moving to Winnipeg at the age of nine, he worked from his early teens to care for his widowed mother and siblings. He met Dorothy (Dodo) Bernstein, the love of his life, during high school years, and they married in Winnipeg in 1943. He brought his wife and daughter to Minneapolis in 1948 and became co-owner of C & B Furniture and Appliance, a Northside fixture until it closed in 1980 to make room for a Target store. Dorothy died in 1975; his second wife, Bess Yellen Cohen, died in 1998.Survived by his daughters, Alisa Cohen Stein (Mark Stein) of Skokie, IL, and Marsha Freeman, of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Daniayla and Aviva Cohen Stein, and David and Laura Freeman; very special friend, Beverly Shapiro; sister, Eva Kushner; brother, Max Cohen and many nieces and nephews. Allan answered to “Uncle Iz”, “Dad”, “Father”, and “Al”, but the role he loved most was Grandpop. He enjoyed countless Little League and soccer games, lunches at McDonald’s, school concerts, grandparents days, Camp Snoopy outings and, eventually, graduations. His grandchildren, children and friends will remember him for his loyalty, generosity, and self-discipline. HE TOOK CARE OF THINGS. Special thanks to the nurses and support staff at N.C.
