Andrew Silberman

–

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Andrew Nathan Silberman, age 67, of Minneapolis, passed away March 12th, 2025. Andy was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. Over the past few days in an outpouring of support, the words used most often to describe Andy were “sweet,” “kind,” “gentle,” “funny” and “smart.”

Andy is survived by his wife of 41 years, Vicki; sons, Jake and Michael (Lauren and son, Mason); sister, Eve (John Hilton); and brother, Alex; and many dear cousins and good friends.

A serious reader, he also loved Peanuts and Pogo, a good deli, and, above all, Detroit sports. Growing up in Oak Park, Michigan, he and his adored father, Jack, watched the Tigers play at Tiger Stadium and finished off the day at one of Andy’s favorite places, Lafayette Coney Island. A Minnesotan for fifty years, he carried on this tradition with his family, making near-annual trips to the city despite the teams’ sometimes abysmal performance. A trip to his hometown would also not be complete without picking up a few beloved chocolate chip horns from the Star Bakery.

While their sons attended Minneapolis Public Schools, Andy volunteered as a coach for several of their Park and Rec sports teams. After the boys graduated, Andy and Vicki hosted several foreign exchange students from around the world. Later they had the pleasure of attending the wedding of one of their Brazilian “daughters.”

Andy received degrees from Carleton College in 1979 and later earned his masters degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1990. Andy hated injustice and gave time and money to organizations dedicated to improving the lives of others. He was an avid volunteer for the Rock Steady Boxing program, where he assisted with drills and held pads for people battling Parkinson’s Disease. He had a lifelong love of playing tennis. Later in life he began taking boxing classes at Uppercut Gym, where he became an integral member of the community. He worked out at the Sabes Jewish Community Center often where he enjoyed the friendships of many other regulars.

Andy and Vicki loved travelling together and were always anticipating their next trip. Vicki is forever grateful for their recent vacation to Palm Springs, a place Andy looked forward to returning to again. A special thrill was attending the tennis academy of Stan Smith, a childhood idol of Andy’s. He was overjoyed to meet Smith on a number of occasions in the last few years.

He loved the written word, writing prize winning short stories early in his career while making his living as a business writer. He worked with many of the same clients for decades; they appreciated his talent and tact.

There are not enough Andy’s in the world. Although he left us far too soon, we remember his life with love and gratitude and will carry him with us wherever we go.

The family requests donations in honor of Andy to be made to the Rock Steady Boxing program or a food shelf of your choice. A memorial service will be held 1:30 PM, TUESDAY, March 18, 2025, at SHIR TIKVAH SYNAGOGUE, 1360 W. Minnehaha Pkwy, Minneapolis. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 27 2025, at Shir Tikvah, at 1:30PM.
