Gunther James Stern Obituary (1927 - 2011)

Gunther James Stern, age 83, of Minnetonka, passed away on November 24, 2011. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth and his parents, Jacob & Helene Stern. Survived by children, Helen Stern, Cheryl (Sanford) Stein, Steven (Georgie Bogdan) Stern; 3 lovely granddaughters, Rachel Stern, Ariel and Brianna Stein; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Laura Stern; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Walter and Inge Steigerwald; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Gunther was born in St. Ingbert, Germany on Dec. 24, 1927. His family emigrated to the U.S. in 1936, making their home in New York City. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan towards the end of World War II. Upon his return, he married the love of his life, Ruth Steigerwald in 1949. He had a lengthy career with Insilco Corporation and moved from New York to Meriden, CT, to Asheville, NC and then to Minneapolis, MN. Upon his retirement, he was a dedicated volunteer at SCORE. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf and bridge, traveling with his family and friends and enjoying the company of his granddaughters. The family wishes to thank Allina Hospice for their dedicated service and Bev Hood for her gentle patience and helping to honor Gunther’s wishes to be in his home. Funeral service SUNDAY 2:30 PM, BETH EL SYNAGOGUE, 5224 W. 26th Street, St. Louis Park. Memorials preferred to Beth El Synagogue, Allina Hospice or donor’s favorite charity.
